Challenge 7 achieved: Helping a Girlguiding unit achieve a badge

When I set myself Challenge 7 – helping a Girlguiding group to get their badges – I had intended to volunteer a few hours of my time to a particular badge. However life never really turns out as planned, and when I signed up via the Guiding website, I was asked whether I’d consider becoming a Unit Helper on a regular basis due to a shortage of adult volunteers. That rapidly became an, almost rhetorical, question about becoming a Leader-in-Training to help establish a new local unit. Due to a long waiting list, there were many girls dropping out after Brownies as all the Guiding units were full.

So in September last year, I went and completed my first module of training, and went through all the various checks. Due to being away, the other Leader decided to wait until January.

We started with about 17 girls in January, and now as I write this, we are likely to take on a few more in September. Our unit has all made their Promise (and I forgot the words….), and have been awarded their Party Planning, Team Player, and a camping badge. Soon we will also have a few more badges completed. I’ve baked cupcakes for the Kew Village Monthly Market stall, slept terribly in a tent, and completed my First Aid courses – so my personal development has also gone up!

So I can officially put Challenge 7 onto the done list!!
