I was only a Girl Guide for a year in the late eighties. My best friend had moved away, and my parents thought it would be a way to make new friends. I achieved my first badge with the help of a girl called Cecily, who was a year older than me. One week later, at the age of 11, she died of an asthma attack. I never returned to the group.
Yet, even in that short time, I learned some skills for life. I can start a camp fire, and I know how to make damper to eat. More importantly, I learned the motto ‘be prepared’.
I’d like to give back to a Girl Guide group somehow and help them achieve a new skill, just like Cecily helped me. Maybe it will be a badge in creative writing, or maybe a marketing or business related skills. I’ll see how it pans out!
